Happy Monday! Today we have storms in the Chicago Area, a perfect opportunity to review if your technology assets are weather protected:
1. GROUNDED: Make sure your equipment is truly grounded and connected to a 3 pin power source. A little further, get a ground detector to ensure your 3 pin connection is truly grounded. You can get them anywhere for just a few bucks.
2. BATTERY BACKUP: In case of surge or power outage servers and computers need to be connected to a UPS (uninterruptible power supply) battery. It's job is not to allow you to continue working in the dark, but to give you a few minutes to shut down your computer or server so the operating system, databases and programs are not affected. Most UPS units actually connect to your PC and shut it down automatically.
3. ABOVE GROUND: Keep your equipment always above ground, never sit a computer on the floor where it can be damaged by water. Also try to keep cables above ground level as well. Tie them under the desk or use cable management gadgets.
4. ONLINE BACKUP: Nature is nature and no matter how preventive you are, things can get bad during a storm. Make sure your data is replicated on the cloud. In case damage to your equipment is unavoidable, you will be able to get back on business quickly.
